The October 2018 IPCC Special Report (SR15) increased the Global Carbon Budget for a 66% of keeping global temperature increases below the dangerous 1.5 degrees. As a result, we have modified and simplified our charts. The revised carbon budget is 420,000 Mt CO2. Many calculations and charts are still based on the 2014 IPCC report and are biased towards per-capita sharing. (We are working on updating this.)
Canada's Share of the Global Carbon Budget
The limit on the amount of CO2 that the atmosphere can safely contain is known as the carbon budget. There are different limits depending upon the maximum global temperature increase that is acceptable and the likelihood of this happening. In addition, the limit is determined by Canada's share of the global carbon budget.
A comparison of the possible targets
This table compares our current targets with what they need to be if we want to remain under our population share of the 2014 carbon budgets for contributing to our pledge to keep temperature increases below 2 degrees.
