Paul Hawken recently published Drawdown which lists approximately 80 strategies which reduce and sequester emissions, and Carbon Brief has listed 10 frequently proposed technologies.
Drawdown maps, measures, models, and describes the 100 most substantive solutions to global warming. For each solution, it describes its history, the carbon impact it provides, the relative cost and savings, the path to adoption, and how it works. The goal of the research that informs Drawdown is to determine if we can reverse the buildup of atmospheric carbon within thirty years. All solutions modeled are already in place, well understood, analyzed based on peer-reviewed science, and are expanding around the world.
They have ranked the top 80 solutions and the total emissions saved or sequestered are approximately 1,050 GtCO2.
The top solution is managing refrigerants (air-conditioning and refrigerators). Ranked next are onshore wind turbines (off-shore turbines are ranked lower although they also remove emissions.)
For example, the following electricity generation options would remove a total of 246 GtCO2.
|2||Wind Turbines (Onshore)|
|22||Wind Turbines (Offshore)|
|29||Wave and Tidal|
|30||Methane Digesters (Large)|
|64||Methane Digesters (Small)|
|77||Energy Storage (Distributed)|
|77||Energy Storage (Utilities)|
The Drawdown plan uses a number of different scenarios which combine emissions and sinks:
- Plausible Scenario (a reasonable yet optimistic forecast): 1,051 GtCO2
- Drawdown Scenario (removing the conservative bias of the Plausible Scenario): 1,443 GtCO2
- Optimum Scenario (the most aggressive potential of solutions, including renewable energy): 1,613 GtCO2
We have estimated that if the globe continues emitting CO2 at the 2018 rate (39 GtCO2/year) for the next 30 years we will emit a total of 1,167 GtCO2 so the Drawdown Scenario (1,443 GtCO2) would remove more than that and therefore allow the globe to remove 100% of our emissions before 2050 which is the recommendation of the IPCC.
Drawdown's plan is a bit more cautious about the Drawdown Scenario than our estimates but optimistic that the Optimum Scenario would work.
